Group classes | AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT (ATM)

Awareness Through Movement refers to the group class element of the Feldenkrais Method. Each lesson is ~60 minutes and is offered on Zoom or in person. Through oral instruction rather than demonstration, the student discovers their own way through the lesson, uncovering habits and unlocking new sensations and experiences that can lead to profound and lasting results in mobility and freedom from injury. Lessons are always open to people of all ages and abilities, and adaptations can always be made.

ATM class most often takes place lying down, but occasionally in a sitting or standing position. There is a strong emphasis on moving slowly, easily, and staying within the range of personal comfort. ATM is perhaps different from other movement classes in that its goals are not about stretching, strengthening, relaxing, meditating, or imitating. Instead lessons are designed to engage your curiosity in yourself and to refine your innate powers of awareness. I co-teach all classes with Feldenkrais practitioner Jeffrey Wells.

finding the ease within

The Feldenkrais method asks participants to be vigilant about their comfort. To find ease and move from and with it, and to notice the transition into strain and pain. The search for internal comfort is often more challenging than it sounds, especially in a difficult world in difficult times. Do we deserve ease? Can we afford comfort? But what if we practice ease and comfort because indeed the world outside us can be so brutal? What if we can feel more clearly our connection to the ground, our ability to direct force, and have more faculty over when, where, and how much we engage? Perhaps developing more intimacy and fluency in our sensation of comfort actually allows us to confront difficult things more gracefully, more effectively, with less cost to our limited bodily resources. 

Join us as we move ourselves into and around these questions over the next 6-weeks.

  • Access to lesson audio recordings if you have to miss or class or want to repeat a class on your own

  • Wednesday mornings 10-11am

  • Friday mornings 9-10am

This class is meant for anyone who is interested in deepening their self-awareness and possibilities of action, regardless of previous experience in the Feldenkrais Method. The space will be open 10 minutes before class begins. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early, especially if you are new, to sign in and familiarize yourself with the space. Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move in—wearing layers is helpful to adjust to temperature shifts. We provide blankets to practice on and any props needed for specific lessons.
